For Immediate Release
Alabama’s nurses will convene in the state Capitol on Wednesday, 15 February 2012 to discuss issues important to the delivery of quality health care in the state.
More than 1.000 nurses and student nurses are expected to attend the rally from 10:00AM – 12:00 Noon at a blocked off Union Street in front of the Alabama State House and behind the historic state Capitol Building. The theme for the day is “Nurses at the Capitol: Alabama Nurses Advancing Healthcare Quality for All Alabamians.” The event is sponsored primarily by the Alabama State Nurses Association and the Alabama Coalition of Nursing Organizations, although many other nurses groups from around the state are participating.

Difficult Conversations
I had an occasion recently to have a difficult conversation with a friend whose husband is dying and she is firmly entrenched in denial. Due to the denial she was wearing herself out taking care of him when calling in hospice would be very beneficial to both of them. Being a healthcare professional that has been a caregiver to someone with a terminal disease I know what this is like and wanted to help her. Read More...

Our annual ASNA House of Delegates and Convention was held 20-22 October at the Auburn University Hotel and Dixon Conference Center in downtown Auburn. We were once again joined by the Alabama Organization of Nurse Executives (AlaONE) and the Alabama Association of Nursing Students (AANS). Beginning with an outstanding lineup on Thursday (the Mable Lamb Continuing Education Day) – highlighted by Dr. Patricia Pearce’s keynote address on Evidence Based Practice and Its’ Use in Safety and Quality in Nursing - we enjoyed a superb list of speakers and presenters throughout the entire event. CE Requirement for Nursing License Renewal
Continuing Education (CE) became a requirement for nursing license renewal in Alabama in the early 1990s when the Alabama Legislature amended the Nurse Practice Act to require CE. (Code of Ala. 1975§ 34-21-23 (f)). The Alabama Board of Nursing’s Administrative Code expands on the statute by stating that the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse are individually accountable for continued competency to practice nursing including knowledge and compliance with applicable statutes and regulations (ABN Admin. Code, §§ 610-X-10-.02(1), 610-X-6-.04(2) (a)(i) and 610-X-6-.05(2)(a)(i)). Read More…
